Generation and Characterization of Isotropic Turbulent Flow at Low Dissipation Rates

The generation of homogeneous and isotropic turbulence (HIT) in laboratories is important for a wide range of applications including mixing and momentum transfer, boundary layer interactions, wake dynamics, particle-laden flows, etc. The present research consists of an experimental study to design, build, and characterize a turbulence forcing facility. The aim was to optimize the homogeneity and isotropy of the turbulent flow while keeping the mean flow velocity near-zero and the dissipation rate near O(10-5) m2/s3. The turbulence facility is an octagonal prism shaped acrylic water tank with fourimpeller arrays. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) was used to characterize the flow. The tank used in this study performed as expected to replicate oceanic turbulence. The tank generated very uniform HIT (? = 1 ± 0.1, ? = 1 ± 0.1) with low dissipation rates O(10-5).
