Developing a Metagenomics Pipeline for an Alzheimer’s Disease Study

With the prevalence of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) on the rise in conjunction with aging populations of the world, research in pursuit of remedies for neurodegeneration continue. There is mounting evidence to suggest lifestyle interventions, which include diet, exercise, and cognitive training, may delay the progression of disease. This is concurrent with the advancement of the microbiome gut-brain axis as a potential avenue of treatment. This study introduces a computational pipeline intended to analyze metagenomics data for a machine learning model predicting the impact of lifestyle interventions on the gut microbiomes of patients with early AD and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Using a pilot data for pipeline development, the workflow integrates advanced data preparation, processing, and documentation. The results lay the foundation for thorough data analysis, suitable for the purposes for which it was intended and adaptable for diverse application.
