Measurement of the Σ Beam Asymmetry of the ⃗γp → a00 (980)p Reaction at Eγ ≈ 9 GeV in the GlueX Experiment
Open Access DepositedThis dissertation presents the first measurement of the Σ beam asymmetry of the reaction ⃗γp → a00(980)p, where the incident photon energy is Eγ ≈ 9 GeV. Data on this reaction were collected by the GlueX experiment in Hall D of the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility in Newport News, VA. The a00(980) is a short lived, neutral particle, and is detected as a resonance in the spectrum of the γp reaction. After photoproduction, the a00(980) decays into ηπ0, both of which subsequently decay into two photons. Only the final-state particles, the four photons and the recoiling proton, were detected by the GlueX apparatus. From the data collected the Σ beam asymmetry of a00(980) photoproduction is determined. Additionally, values for the mass and width of the a00 (980) were extracted from a fit to the 4-photon invariantmass. Neutral pion photoproduction in ⃗γp → π0p and ⃗γp → a00(980)p were compared with a Regge-model phenomenology. The Σ beam asymmetry is a polarization observable that gives insight into the interaction between the photon and proton that produces the a00(980). The goal of studying such an observable is to further characterize the behavior of the Strong Force that dominates nuclear physics.
