Protecting Personal Identifiable Information in the Financial Services Sector with Zero Trust Architecture
Open AccessThe financial services sector collects and processes personally identifiable information (PII) such as names, social security numbers, bank accounts, and credit card numbers. This sector is a major target for data breaches and ransomware attacks due to its handling of PII, use of cloud-based technologies, and remote work. Cybercriminals are attracted to the potential financial gains from successful attacks in this industry (Adrian & Ferreira, 2023).Traditional perimeter security is no longer effective in protecting the financial services sector against data breaches and ransomware. The constant evolution of threats requires organizations to adapt. The rise in these incidents highlights the need for better protection measures. Zero Trust Architecture (ZTA) offers solutions to address cyber challenges in the industry and can enhance the protection of PII data for financial institutions.Zero Trust is a new approach to security that focuses on users, devices, and applications rather than network perimeters. It assumes no inherent trust based on location or ownership and instead requires authentication and authorization for all access. This strategy relies on behavioral analytics and continuous authentication to establish trust (Rose et al., 2020).This study has shown that ZTA is a superior cybersecurity approach for safeguarding sensitive data within the contemporary corporate network. Additionally, it suggests enhancing the detection capabilities by integrating the anomaly detection function into the threat intelligence component.
