Desiderium

Through interdisciplinary processes, I investigate “belonging” as intangible moments just out of grasp. As a queer/crip man, I live on the outskirts of the traditional world we are conditioned to strive for. Moreover, being disabled has kept me from an entirely immersive gay space and vice versa. Each of these identities has often placed me on the borderlands of these groups, with a feeling of never being totally whole in either. I am an exile, looking for home. Desiderium : an ardent desire or longing especially : a feeling of loss or grief for something lost. I use materials as tools to glimpse into, or pry open, the potential access points into communities I long to be accepted in. To deconstruct, and re-present notions of perfection and the ideal. I hope to form connections between people by reflecting on our unchangeable pasts while building a new unknown reality in what could be. This thesis will be part biography and part process/work analysis. I will give context to my artwork, what has influenced my identity, and pepper in inspirations or input materials.
