An Examination of Success Factors for Effective Visual Arts Management
Open AccessThis research analyzes management practices in non-profit visual arts organizations and compares them to arts management curricula taught in universities and colleges in the United States. Interviews with six current arts managers conclude that it is more important to have a solid understanding of fine arts or performing arts than experience in the management of art programs alone. Arts management programs in graduate schools emphasize the business end of arts management and teach little about the human and artistic side of managing arts programs, such as creative development, dealing with artists, and serving community interests. The author further examines the differences of managing visual and performing arts and discusses the importance of the educational component offered in non-profit visual arts organizations.
