No And: Noise and Nonconforming Gender

Open Access

Noise is sound, metaphor, and strategy. Noise welcomes negativity and resists social pressure for positive stability and wholeness, a pressure imposed on individuals by a culture that aims to perpetually reproduce sameness. Noise queers or inverts the vertical binary that privileges clear and coherent meaning. Noise provides an unstable structure for thinking nonconforming and unstable genders, for bodies as continual process. The instability of noise intersects with and informs my engagement with nonconforming gender in performance art.
