Gabriela Mistral: How Society and Politics Influenced Her Moral Character and Her Professional Persona

Gabriela Mistral lived in a very chauvinist society in Chile, where competition among male writers was hard. Some of them did recognize her strong work, while others rejected it because of her socialist ideals, her lack of academic background and the fact that she was a woman and not from the high society. While representing Chile by invitation of politicians and governors, she visited many American and European countries where she was also published. This paper recaptures the importance of her work and explains why she was so controversial in her time. This research explores how the society of her times was a destructive influence that kept her in the “shadows”, while in the rest of the world she was considered one of the most influent writers in all Latin America. Ironically, today, she has been forgotten outside our country, and is well recognized in Chile.
