After Standing
Open AccessThis is a multimedia storytelling project that documents how one woman from South Florida named Angi is using her passionate avocation for aerial silk arts as a complementary therapy approach to her addiction recovery journey. Aerial silk arts are a style of acrobatic performance (familiarized by Cirque du Soleil) in which the practitioner climbs, wraps, spins, and drops from fabric suspended 20 or more feet above ground. This story of sobriety is told through a short documentary film titled, “After Standing”, a photography series titled, “Replaced Rituals”, a visual and text-based book titled, “The Caterpillar and the Butterfly”, and a long-form news-feature article titled, “Defying Gravity: America’s Addiction Epidemic”. Angi’s addictive personality is not something she can change about herself, but a characteristic that can be directed towards other positive, healthy addictions, like her love for aerial silks and other circus arts. No longer a criminal struggling with drug and alcohol abuse, Angi is fulfilling her roles as a mother, a daughter, a sister, and a girlfriend.
