Mathematical Programming Applications to Electrical Grid Operations
Open AccessThis dissertation is about applying mathematical programming techniques to electrical grids or electrical markets. More specifically, stochastic programming frameworks are used in both essays composing this dissertation. In the first essay, we deal with a short-term, plant-specific issue. We devise a method for obtaining high-quality, forward-looking thresholds for the operation and dispatching of pumped-storage plants. We also present a new solution methodology that can be applied to similar problems. The second essay is about a long-term, investment and expansion issue. A version of the stochastic generation expansion planning problem is presented with added considerations for fuel assurance and environmental constraints. This requires modeling of investment as well as operational decisions and resulted in a large-scale stochastic problem. The methodology for solving the problem is based on a combination of cutting-edge techniques. Both of the essays in this dissertation offer methodological contributions in the field of mathematical programming and practical applications in the industry.
