Cyber Security – Best Practices in Federal Procurement to Defend the Next Attack

Cyber security threats are becoming more and more prevalent around the world and impacting the global economy. The United States should strengthen its defenses against cyber-attacks through building a stronger contractor base by requiring cyber best practices to be applied within the federal procurement system. This thesis will explore several significant cyber-attacks to find the root causes of cyber-attacks as well as best practices for defense. The current defenses within the federal procurement system will be analyzed and evaluated on how effective the defenses are at defending a cyber-attack and how well the defenses are implemented. This paper intends to provide recommended changes to the federal procurement cyber defenses to utilize best practices and encourage successful implementation of the defenses.
