Ourselves

Ourselves is a multimedia project documenting the lives of Mikey Stipkovits and Dane Kunst, a transgender couple. Previously identifying as a lesbian couple, both began the process to transition from female to male on May 21, 2015. The project began during their third month of transition and administration of testosterone. The process of transition and transgender individuals has been a main topic in recent news. North Carolina’s restroom law which forces trans people to use the bathroom designated to the gender on their birth certificate and not their transition is one of numerous examples of public coverage. The goal of Ourselves was to focus on the emotional impact and effects of transition in contrast to process. Framing through their relationship, the project exposes themes of support, independence, and the pursuit of self-actualization. Mikey and Dane aren't just changing physically and mentally, their relationship is also in transition.
