Beyond the Fabric

Beyond the Fabric is an exhibition that explores Afrofuturism using historically relevant color theory, nonlinear storytelling and fiber arts. The works in the exhibition are a series of painted portraits, burlap tapestries and embroidery. These pieces depict an Afrofuturistic world full of color and explore the depiction of African Americans in different forms of media. The size, scale and color choices in the works are deliberate choices that add to the narrative that moves through the works. The aim of the show is to provide the viewer with visually engaging works that naturally push them to move throughout the exhibition and spark their own imagination of a future that is more representative of the world they’d like to see. The arrangement of the works operates as an example of nonlinear storytelling, encouraging the viewer to wonder for themselves what is the beginning and end of a new world.
