The Influence of Weather on Infrared Polarization Imaging: Cloud Analysis and Target Visibility

Infrared polarization imaging offers advantages in target detection and characterization under diverse environmental conditions. Its effectiveness, however, can be affected by weather factors such as cloud cover, solar irradiance, and temperature. This thesis investigates the effects of weather on infrared polarization imaging, focusing on two key areas: 1. Enabling the quantification of cloud cover by utilizing deep learning techniques to automate the segmentation of sky images into cloud and sky, and further to categorize cloud types. 2. Examining the relationship between weather variables and the visibility of various targets using two infrared polarized sensing modalities. This research contributes to optimization of image acquisition and analysis for improved target visibility under various weather conditions.
