Beyond the Noose: Italian Immigrants in Late-Nineteenth Century New Orleans

On October 15, 1890, New Orleans police chief David Hennessy was gunned down. After the Italian men tried for the crime were acquitted, townspeople lynched all nine of them, along with two others. This infamous incident has completely characterized the experience of Italian immigrants in late-nineteenth century New Orleans, as little other scholarly attention has been paid to their community. This study, however, explores the many other aspects to Italian life in the Crescent City, including residential patterns, occupation, family life, literacy, and naturalization patterns to reveal that Italians in New Orleans flourished rather than floundered.
