Engaging the Community Through Experiential Spaces

Open Access

Pickering Creek Audubon Center is devoted to increasing environmental literacy through education and outreach to the community. The Center's 400 acre property is located on Pickering Creek of the Wye East River, a tributary of the Chesapeake Bay. The Center operates educational programs on and off site, offers community activities focused on the local habitats and the ecology of the Chesapeake Bay, and encourages self-guided tours of the property. The present facilities do not capitalize on opportunities to orient, inform or inspire visitors to Pickering Creek or provide adequate interior space with supporting infrastructure that would enhance the educational experience and provide avenues for Pickering Creek to expand its outreach efforts and support its operations. Using sustainable materials in keeping with the Center's mission and incorporating information technology, the new facilities' design creates stimulating and engaging spaces that will become hubs of activity for the Center, thereby energizing its programs and heightening the Center's profile in the community.
