LAW, Terminal 3: Gradient-Guided Renovation, Modernization, & Humanization

Air travel is a necessity, and reality, for many millions of people each year. On average travelers' experiences within the airport are less than favorable, and often stressful. Airports across the board are missing the mark. There is an unexplored opportunity, to provide guests with a comfortable, enriching, and relaxing space, which would enhance their overall air travel experience.Since September 11, 2001, air travel has become more time consuming due in part to stricter security guidelines, causing travelers to spend more time within the airport, especially waiting in the terminal. This time is often inefficient because of the significant lack of technological accommodation and work surfaces. Families are also impacted by the poor design of Terminal 3, because of its lack of facilities for children to play and minimal moments of group seating.In my life, Los Angeles International Airport's Terminal 3 has represented a point of transition between my California home and my Washington, D.C. life. The terminal itself is has no sense of place or grounding, it is purely a transitional space. Additionally, it is void of any range or options in design, which impacts passengers' experiences by creating uncomfortable situations. I propose a plan to renovate, modernize, and humanize Terminal 3, through the addition of a children's space, technology center, myriad seating arrangements, dining options, and outdoor space, with the culture, spirit, and lifestyle of Los Angeles as the basis for my design concept.
