0 to 60
Open AccessThis thesis investigates the culture and rituals of young males as they undergo the right of passage; transitioning to adulthood at time in which male obsolescence creates conflict in a shifting society. By focusing on dangerous and illegal street racing, this documentary photography series and short film, “0 to 60” offers an intimate portrayal of a group of young men living in the ex-burbs of the Nation’s Capital who struggle with boredom, lack of opportunities, and a lack of outlet for bottled up energy and adrenaline. Through informal car meets held in parking lots of suburban shopping centers, young men channel their energy and project their evolving identities and lifestyles through their vehicles. Cars provide an escape from the stresses of daily life.
