A Time Together
Open Access Depositedphotographs that make the viewer sit and contemplate what they are experiencing, whether it be a sense of familiarity or a new experience. I remove elements of the colonial and exploitive nature that photography was built upon to magnify my own voice and the voices of my collaborators. The Canon Mark II, twin-lens camera, Pentax K100, rolls of 35 and 120 film, a spot meter, and a journal are foundational materials in my practice and my studio. The work I am creating is making oral history tangible and making photographs that celebrate and acknowledge the present in remembrance of the past and impact the future. My work is collaborative and inclusive, where people have the opportunity to create their own narrative about themselves and their community. While doing this, I am pushing back the traditional forms of photography, challenging and critiquing photography’s exploitative nature. A Time Together transports the viewer, the sitter, and the photographer to futurity and past — a place where memory becomes forever.
In A Time Together, I am investigating the rest and labor of Black bodies. I argue that rest and memory are achievable in a Black body. I am amplifying and highlighting Blackness, which continues to shine with exuberant joy and laughter. As a Black woman, my identity, past experiences, and ancestry connect me to themes of care, labor, legacy, self-articulation, and warmth. Elements of line, shape, and light conspire across the photographs and communicate care, comfort, and community. Black, always capitalized in regards to Black people and spaces I have the honor of memorializing. In a time of mass media and consumption of images, I am making images that have the power to sing on their own
