Diabetes Diagnosis by Measuring the Dielectric Constant at L-band Using Transmission and Reflection Method
Open AccessDiabetes is among the top ten leading cause of death in the United States. Early diagnosis ofdiabetes is crucial for devising an appropriate treatment. Various diabetes diagnostic and screeningtests have been developed which can be divided into two main categories, namely: invasivemethods which require blood samples, and non-invasive techniques. In this research we aim tostudy the application of microwaves in the L-band frequency range, i.e. 1-2 GHz, for non-invasivediagnosis of diabetes.The complex permittivity of a blood plasma mimicking solution was measured at different glucoseconcentration using both the transmission and the reflection methods. In order to determine thecomplex permittivity more accurately, a technique based on the singular value decomposition wasdevised and implemented for processing the experimental data. Furthermore, a parameter wasdefined to interpret the measurements for diabetes diagnostic using the reference value of complexpermittivity obtained at the highest concentration of glucose in a healthy person. We showed thatthis parameter can be used to interpret the measurements for diagnosis of diabetes and distinguishbetween diabetes type one and type two. These results demonstrate the potential of this techniquefor non-invasive diagnosis of diabetes.
