Nonimportation in Massachusetts, New York, and Virginia: A Comparative Study
Open AccessThis thesis will be a comparative study of the nonimportation agreements of three colonies: Massachusetts, New York, and Virginia. It will detail how proponents of nonimportation in the various colonies went about enforcing and advocating for the temporary cessation of the importation of British goods. The way in which the initial nonimportation agreements came to an end differed from colony to colony, but Virginia stood out. The movement in Virginia began later, was altered sooner, and appeared to have fewer participants than did the colonies of New York and Massachusetts. Virginia’s deviance from the other two colonies in terms of its nonimportation movement resulted largely from the social relations among the Virginia colonists.
