Design of a Device for the Automated Mapping, and Treatment of Atrioventricular Nodal Reentry Tachycardia
Open AccessThe technologies introduced in this thesis are developed by Dr. John Roger’s lab at the University of Illinois Urbana in collaboration with the Igor Efimov lab at George Washington University. The novel technologies enable a robust set of tools and platforms which makes it possible to design a host of devices for the improved treatment of disease states. This document will focus on the applications of this technology on Atrioventrivular Nodal Reentry Tachycardia as it is a disease state that is well understood, prevalent in the population, and lends itself to the application of new technologies to improve treatment outcomes. The thesis will describe the clinical significance, and pathophysiology of Atrioventricular Nodal Reentry Tachycardia, examine the current state of clinical practice for how the disease is treated and with what devices it is treated. This document will also evaluate the constraints present in current technologies and introduce new technologies with promise of new treatment options highlighting the new capabilities that such new technologies give rise to and the new limitations that come with them. Finally, this thesis will propose a novel device to be used in the treatment of AVNRT. The proposal will document the requirements for that device, and provide a design specification for how to achieve those requirements. This thesis is accompanied by a provisional design patent for the use of the novel technologies and the utilization of the new technologies in a wider set of possible embodiments. The work contained in this thesis serves as a detailing of one particular embodiment of a device.
