Context Matters: Semantic and Perceptual Influences on Object Attention
Open AccessThis dissertation investigates the impact of contextual effects on attention and perception through a series of research papers. The findings support the substantial influence of contextual effects, providing compelling evidence for their automatic nature. Chapter 2 focuses on the relationship between depth and perceived size. By manipulating perceptual size and depth, the experiments reveal variations in response times, demonstrating the modulatory effect of depth on perceived size. In Chapter 3, the attentional influence of task-irrelevant semantic information is examined. The results show that semantic information guides attention, even when it is irrelevant to the task at hand. Notably, complex objects with multiple defining features exhibit a semantic bias, prioritizing attention towards semantically related objects. Chapter 4 introduces scenes into the study of contextual effects. The experiments investigate the relationship between objects and scenes, highlighting the influence of semantic and size congruency on object and scene identification. The findings demonstrate that both semantics and size play a role in performance, particularly in visually challenging and naturalistic tasks. Overall, this dissertation provides convincing evidence for the extensive influence of contextual effects on both attention and perception. By acknowledging the change in perceptual experience depending on environmental influences, this dissertation provides novel contributions to our understanding of real-world human perception.
