Recovery Plan Modeling for Backward Planning, Low-Volume Manufacturing

In a backward planning manufacturing environment, there is minimal allowance for the business to overcome normal production disruptions such as material shortages, technical design issues, and inoperable or bottlenecked equipment. When a manufacturing disruption occurs, the manufacturing and engineering subject matter experts are required to develop recovery plans to mitigate the disruptions and ensure the scheduled delivery dates can be met as previously agreed upon with the customer. This research presents the application of a multi-criteria decision model (MCDM) to automate the creation of recovery plans and assess their feasibility against work center workload data and production schedules. The MCDM features and criteria weighting were developed utilizing expert paired comparison and the analytical hierarchy process to develop the weighting of the critical criteria. Through the utilization of recovery plans, the business is provided an opportunity to more accurately forecast their production delivery dates after overcoming a production disruption.
