Career Builder: A Mobile Application Support for Immigrant Job seekers
Open AccessFor many immigrants coming to the United States in pursuit of better opportunities is a dream come true. However, most immigrants experience challenges with language barriers, difficulty securing decent employment, raising children and helping them succeed academically, securing housing, transportation, accessing public services, prejudice, and cultural shock. Using a Human-Centered Design approach to explore the barrier that immigrant job seekers face in securing high-paying jobs in the United States. Hence my research centers around the question How Might We empower immigrant jobseekers to attain self-efficacy in career development in the United States? The overall research findings showed that factors such as limited social capital, lack of prior US work experience, and personal support such as resume writing, and job reskilling are key challenges that impede their chances of employability. It is in this backdrop that I designed CareerBuilder, a mobile application that provides recent immigrants with employment support for securing jobs and economic stability in the US. CareerBuilder offers features that enhance a job seeker’s job search experience and ability to develop skills and habits for career development. The features include real-time, peer-edited resume support from professionals and industry experts; facility to enhance social capital through engagement with other immigrant professionals. Overall, CareerBuilder aims to provide people with the tools and resources needed to build self-efficacy for employability and career success.
