Generalized and Crisis-Specific Self-Efficacy, Burnout, and Secondary Traumatic Stress in the Behavioral Health Crisis Workforce
Open Access DepositedThis dissertation investigates the relationships between generalized self-efficacy (GSE), crisis-specific self-efficacy (CSE), burnout, and secondary traumatic stress (STS) within the behavioral health crisis workforce, a group that regularly operates in high- stress environments. While existing research links burnout and STS, the role of self- efficacy in mitigating these negative outcomes among crisis workers has received little attention. This study addresses that gap by examining how GSE and CSE influence burnout and STS in crisis settings. Previous literature underscores the harmful effects of burnout and STS on mental health professionals, but the potential protective role of self- efficacy, especially crisis-specific self-efficacy, remains underexplored. Using a cross- sectional survey design, data were collected from 121 crisis workers and analyzed through correlation, regression, and moderation analyses to examine the associations between GSE, CSE, burnout, and STS, and how these self-efficacy beliefs moderate the relationship between these stressors and personal accomplishment. The findings reveal that both GSE and CSE are linked to lower levels of burnout and STS, with CSE having a particularly strong protective effect. Additionally, GSE and CSE moderate the relationship between STS and burnout-related personal accomplishment, suggesting that higher self-efficacy beliefs buffer the negative impact of STS on workers' sense of achievement. These results highlight the importance of targeted crisis-specific training and support aimed at boosting self-efficacy. The study recommends organizational interventions, such as leadership development and mentorship, to promote resilience and reduce burnout and STS within the crisis workforce.
