“Some Assembly Required” is a written account of my Masters of Fine Art thesis exhibition. My exhibition employed a number of artistic strategies to display the manner in which my practice combines photography and objects to re-trace public and personal moments in history. My practice re-contextualizes the object as a connector, often closing the gap between one epoch and another in a single photograph or artistic gesture. I use everyday objects to recall America’s lengthy and complex history. I systematically combine social experiences such as slavery, The Great Depression, and the Domestic Worker’s Movement with black, female, and Caribbean identities to create a standpoint outside of dominant narratives. Doing such demonstrates the manner in which I create new meanings through the performance of assembling pre-existing information and visual material.
