Comparative Genetic Expression Signatures of BRCA1/2 Mutation Carriers With And Without Early Onset Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is among the deadliest cancers, affecting millions of people worldwide. The most widely studied predisposition genes in breast cancer are BRCA1 and BRCA2. Even though mutations in BRCA1/2 increase the possibility of developing breast cancer in one’s lifetime, it should be noted that there is a percent of BRCA1/2 mutation carriers that can remain breast cancer free for a significant duration of their lives. These people usually develop breast cancer after their 60s which raises the question about what other protective mechanisms there are in these individuals that protect them from developing breast cancer for such a long amount of time. Here we talk about gene expression profiles of individuals who carry pathogenic mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2, and have an early onset (<40 years) disease versus mutation carriers with late onset disease (>60 years).
