Open Access DepositedThis thesis presents a comprehensive study of the concept of repentance (tawbah) in Islamic mysticism, focusing on the theological and metaphysical contributions of ʿAllāma Ḥasan Zādeh Āmulī. Drawing from his treatise al-ʿAwbah ilā al-Tawbah min al-Ḥawbah. The study situates repentance not merely as a moral obligation but as a transformative spiritual station within the broader framework of Islamic metaphysical thought. Through a detailed analysis of Qurʾānic verses, prophetic traditions, and classical and contemporary Shiʿi philosophical sources, the thesis explores how Tawbah functions as an existential return to the Divine. The work further contextualizes ʿAllāma’s approach by examining his intellectual lineage, biographical background, and synthesis of philosophy (ḥikmah), theology (kalām), and mysticism (ʿirfān). His dual approach to theoretical and practical mysticism, inspired by thinkers such as Mullā Ṣadrā and Ibn ʿArabī, highlights a vision of repentance that is both epistemologically rich and spiritually dynamic.The thesis explores that Tawbah is not simply an episodic reaction to sin, but a perpetual process of cognition, purification, and divine proximity. In doing so, it contributes to a deeper understanding of the practical, moral and spiritual dimensions of repentance in Shiʿi thought and Islamic mysticism widely.
