Optical Group Effects in Artificial Intelligence
Open AccessAI often involves the processing of data in a neighborhood. That is, the context of a data point is almost always central to mapping the data point into a reduced latent space. Similarly, in optics, the neighborhood of a point in a wavefront can have a drastic effect on the propagation of the wavefront. In this dissertation, I explore a variety of optical group effects with applications in AI. Group effects are those optical effects that have spatial or temporal dependence on a neighborhood. These effects include the propagation of light, the in-built nonlinearity of intensity, the Fourier transform of the lens, symmetry, multiple reflections with kaleidoscopes, coherent optical processors, 4f and joint transform correlator, near field with bow ties, and pulses.
