Autonomous - The Rise of Drones in the United States Open Access
The multimedia piece Autonomous documents the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in the United States -- more commonly known as drones. As the aircraft have become accessible to the average person a new technology sector has been born, one with enormous potential but little regulation. Inventors and entrepreneurs are racing to adapt drones to perform new tasks. The technology is being used in the search for missing persons, wildfire prevention and management, the monitoring of endangered species, disaster response, aerial photography and mapping, and agricultural crop monitoring. Recently, Congress has tasked the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) with establishing drone regulations. With all of this activity it is safe to say that drones will have a substantial impact on our society over the next decade.
