Examining the Lingering Consequences of Bush’s 2002 “Axis of Evil” State of the Union Address Through Partisan Media Analysis from 2018-2021

In this thesis, I will conduct a content analysis of how the “axis of evil” State of the Union speech by George W. Bush was perceived in the years after its debut in a comparison of U.S. conservative media outlet Fox News and liberal media outlet CNN. The significance of this analysis will offer possible impacts the “axis of evil” rhetoric had on U.S. foreign policy with Iran. The significance of this body of work will be anchored in neo-Orientalism as the question of why the “axis of evil” speech, which was a mere fraction of that 2002 State of the Union speech, continues to thrive in the U.S.-Middle East foreign policy space.
