A Methodology for Developing System of Systems Architectures Through SysML Model Federation

Systems engineering is widely regarded as a transdisciplinary approach to meeting stakeholder needs through the development and sustainment of systems. Two major trends well documented throughout literature are the continuous increase in system complexity driving the practice towards System of Systems (SoS), and the transformation of countless industries to a digital approach in conducting business and engineering. As system complexity increases, a greater number of organizations are being asked to contribute architecture/design content for systems development. An essential challenge to overcome is how to ensure digital continuity in connecting system models to form Systems of Systems (SoS) models. This research adopts principles from systems engineering, SoS engineering, digital engineering, and Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) to present a methodology for SysML model federation enabling multiple contributing organizations to provide peer models for inclusion within a federation SoS model. This work builds upon previously published Systems Architecture Model (SAM) development approach which serves as a basis to expand into multi-model SoS development. Systems engineers applying this methodology are able to reuse constituent systems model content, from the problem and/or solution space, to describe the larger SoS structure and behavior while promoting reusability and commonality. This methodology is designed to permit style diversity across peer constituent models and ensure that every piece of data has an Authoritative Source of Truth (ASOT) within the federation. After presenting the methodology, it is then applied to the openly published Ranger Lunar Rover system architecture to demonstrate its utility. Several opportunities for further research are then identified to improve the robustness of the research presented. Systems engineering practitioners engaged in MBSE may use this methodology to develop a multi-model federation able to describe system and SoS architectures models in SysML.
