Open AccessAbstractTelework: What the United States Air Force Must Consider in Order to Make it a Sustainable Option for Civilians and Service Members The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 lead to the biggest increase in telework ever seen. This impacted every country in the world and touched every industry in some way. Many companies and organizations had to scramble to develop a telework policy that they could implement immediately and operate on their current infrastructure. The United States Air Force was scrambling just like everyone else. It had fallen behind on keep its information technology updated in recent years and could not immediately support the hundreds of thousands of personnel who suddenly needed to work from home. In the wake of the first wave of the pandemic, the Air Force began developing a more sustainable approach to telework that could be implemented even after the world returned to normal. Despite its efforts, there are still many shortfalls in the current Air Force telework policy that must be rectified to ensure efficiency and sustainability amongst the telework force. The Air Force can draw inspiration and best practice tips from the civilian sector and other countries in order to improve the current telework policy. Continued opportunities to work from home are becoming the standard around the world. There are many benefits in authorizing more telework for both employers and employees. In order to attract the highest-quality employees and keep them satisfied with their jobs, the Air Force must adapt its policy so that it remains a feasible option for civilians and Service Members who are considering beginning or maintaining employment with the United States Air Force.
