A Model-Based Architecture Framework for Engineering Constructive Infrastructure Systems of Systems

System of Systems Engineering (SoSE) is one of the fastest growing subfields of systems engineering due to the importance that Systems of Systems (SoS) play in our society. SoS have become widely implemented from military applications and Information Technology (IT) networks to regional and national infrastructures. Developing these SoS, however, has faced many challenges due to the characteristics of these unique and complex structures. SoS requirements development, modeling, architecture characterization, simulation, and testing of these structures differ from traditional systems and software engineering methods. Tying these areas together has posed an even greater challenge. Consequently, most SoS engineering efforts have largely been experience-based endeavors—using lessons learned and custom modeling techniques to develop a SoS architecture with which to verify requirements and initiate the SoS design. Fortunately, recent advances in these areas have made it possible to identify and develop common SoS engineering and architecting principles, frameworks, and models. Coupled with advances in model-based systems engineering, the community is now able to apply these principles to develop formalisms in the early SoS engineering process. This paper identifies requirements for a general model-based SoS architecture framework to assist SoS engineers in developing a SoS architecture. Using these requirements, the paper proposes a general SoS Architecture Framework (SoSAF), identifying its required viewpoints and subordinate views.
