Krakauer, Sedaris, and 9/11: Identity, Foreign Policy, and Change in the International System
Open AccessAmerican foreign policy has undergone drastic changes in the 21st Century, particularly since the 9/11 terrorist attacks. This project explores the American sense of Self before and after 9/11 in order to determine if and how identity analysis can provide useful explanations of foreign policy formulation and shifts. It shows that work done by Ted Hopf, which uses pop culture to generate insights into national identity and foreign policy, has utility outside of the Russian context in which it was situated. And it builds on his work by explaining why change happens in the international system through the lens of his identity and foreign policy model.
