Simulation-Based Evaluation of Perimeter-based and Zero Trust Security Implementation on Internet of Things

The shift from Perimeter-based security to Zero Trust security has been a long time in the making. Nevertheless, the President’s insistence on an accelerated transition with an ambitious schedule raises concerns about potential negative impacts on enterprise businesses. The shift to Zero Trust will cost businesses money, time, and resources. With no solid implementation plan and complete enterprise testing, the effects of Zero Trust security implementation on businesses and mission environments still need to be determined. This study aims to uncover the emergent impacts of Zero Trust security implementation on wireless Internet of Things, specifically in a tactical environment. Implementing the Department of Defense (DoD) Zero Trust on the Internet of Things improves cybersecurity, preventing cyberattacks from spreading throughout the network. An improved cybersecurity posture should not impede or diminish the operational activities of the Internet of Things (Defense, 2023). Unlike other studies, this research evaluates the effects of Zero Trust and Perimeter-based security on networks using a modeling and simulation tool and assesses the impact of the Policy Decision Point (PDP) / Policy Enforcement Point (PEP) function of Zero Trust on overall network latency. This represents a non-standard evaluation of Zero Trust that focuses on the overall availability of the environment to determine the feasibility for fielding in mobile wireless networks typical of Internet of Things (IoT) deployments. Our modeling and simulation approach evaluates Zero Trust and Perimeter-based security on three different network architectures: Wired network, Wireless Static (i.e., laptops connected to the wireless network), and Wireless Mobile (IoT). The architectures are stressed with different types of cyberattacks on the network while under regular use of the Internet of Things in a simulation tool. The simulation shows how cyberattacks affect Zero Trust and Perimeter-based security implementation.
