Artists' Books and Children's Books

This thesis examines the connections between the artists' book genre and the genre of illustrated children's books, asking if certain illustrated texts by children's book authors could be considered to be artists' books. A brief history of children's book publishing in the U.S. is provided for context. The works and writings of author/artists Maurice Sendak and Peter Sis are discussed since both authors have stated that their later works, while exploring childhood themes, are intended for adults. The paper concludes that their works are not artists books; these works are hybrids and deserve recognition as a new form of art.
